Virginia Creeper Trail

Rode the Creeper in early June round trip from Abingdon, VA to top of mtn and on to trestle 47. Last miles were on eroded and unmaintained trail with trestle 47 too unimproved for me to cross. It is downhill from Agingdon to Damascus, uphill to top of mtn, downhill to trestle 47 and you can figure out the rest. Trail is an easy ride although the long uphill from Damascus to top of mtn can wear a bit on you. Worst uphill is last 4 or 5 miles. But downhill is a blast. Do it late in the day to minimize trail traffic and you can really fly. Plenty of rest stops enroute with a cafe about a third of the way up the mtn. Benches for short stops. The trestles are well maintained as is the trail. And it is really beautiful. The Rhododendron weren't blooming yet but Mountain Laurel were. Damascus is a town revived by the Creeper Trail and caters to hikers and bikers. Look forward to doing it again soon with my wife although promised her that I'd have her bike trailered to the top and she can join me for the ride downhill.
